Mongolia is a nation bordered by China and Russia, is known for vast, rugged expanses and nomadic culture

Genghis Khan, born around May 31, 1162, established the Mongol Empire in 1206, which became the largest entirely connected (contiguous) empire in history. It occupied approximately 22% of all land on Earth. Mongolia remains heavily nomadic, with approximately 30% of Mongolians being classified as nomads.

Mongolian culture is a rich melting pot of shamanism and Buddhist beliefs with an infusion of nomadic values and traditions. The Marxist beliefs forced onto the countries during the socialist period have started to disappear within the country.

Its area is roughly equivalent with the historical territory of Outer Mongolia, and that term is sometimes used to refer to the current state. It is sandwiched between Russia to the north and China to the south, where it neighbours the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Mongolia does not share a border with Kazakhstan, although only 37 kilometres (23 mi) separate them.
